Brilliant Color

Bright colors glow with confidence when mixed with smart tailored silhouettes as seen on Caroline Issa during fashion week.  The hard part for me is identifying a palette before I invest. I love every color but my skin tone is golden olive.  A blessing for sure but certain shades of pink are too blue to flatter and just look loud unless tempered with orange or violet.   Oddly, I find neon shades (including Shaparelli’s Le Shocking) easy to pull off. Colors in the red-pink-purple family work extra hard on the street and in the office but do require an upbeat attitude ready to handle the inevitable flood of attention.

Look Smart

With tax time rolling around it pays to look smart.  I just returned from my account’s office and I’m feeling in the clear, phew.  Being a free-lancer is no joke when it comes to managing finances.  With unpredictable payments and a roller coaster budget, strict organization and spending rules are mandatory.  I might sneak in an extra hour’s rest in the a.m., but that doesn’t mean that slacking is ever allowed.   Librarian prim is having a strong moment for me, a nice counterbalance to the Nicki Minaj out-there extremes of the London shows.  Matching strong values with enthusiasm to learn, the perpetual schoolgirl balances out.

Smart set celebrating sensibly at the home of interior designer Muriel Brandolini.

Juan Carlos Obando Nails It For Fall

Ivan Shaw liked this post

Oh JC, thank you for bringing us fierce dresses with long sleeves that feel chic and grown up but still handmade and special.  I want it all from the damask biker jackets to the sexy satin gowns but most of all your unusual cuts that make my body sing your praise.

Horror Chic

Ivan Shaw liked this post

Part David Bowie, part Stanley Kubrick these looks are not God-fearing. When in the mood to stir things up, darkly outlandish gear hits the spot. A little mind bender is always a crowd pleaser, especially during Fashion Week. You know how peeps like to get all analytic dissecting details as they mentally size you up?  Go on, make their day.

Thakoon’s show last night had my heart a flutter and put me in the mood.  I’m in love with the vibrant palette, easy feminine shapes, girl-lady sauciness and smoochable scarlet lips.

Fashion Week Fall Favorites

Come fall I will be wearing a mix of prints and textures combined with sporty cuts so I can move freely in soft shapes and cozy layers.   Band of Outsiders, Prabal Gurung, Rag & Bone and Lacoste, these looks are on my list.

California dreaming at Band Of Outsiders.  This boho urban mix has me booking a trip out west.

Fall Shows Day 2: A Fashion Week Report

I’ll be sporting peplems, asymmetrical hems, color blocks, it-girl-with-a-career combos, bubble shapes, and tuxedo stripes all with rather clean hair & make-up–just a bit of eye and lippy.  Absolutely loving what I saw at Derek Lam’s 10 Crosby, Rachel Comey, Organic by John Patrick and Michael Angel.  The air is thick with excitement as it all gets underway. Save your shopping until FW ends so you can scoop up next season’s shapes and colors now.

This hem gives a great leg. The peplum has so much movement it makes me want to twirl with enthusiasm.

The Rules of Fashion Spending

Feel good, look good.  Feeling good comes first. Let’s be honest, it’s hard be the master of my universe while swimming in debt or even worse, while wearing something ugly. And how is it that something that was beautiful 3 years ago is so atrocious now? It’s a good designer, beautiful fabric, my size hasn’t really changed and I did not get it on sale. I need to hide this evidence, and quick. An expensive fashion blunder feels is akin to a con job only this time I was seduced by a very comely supermodel with the benefit of Photoshop. Oh, the delusions of grandeur.

Why Accessorize?

Fashion week is coming. My first impulse is to ask for a credit extension at my bank followed by a more reasonable solution: a quick power session with my closet. During normal life, well-fitting jeans with an interesting tee and some cool hand-me-downs suit pretty much every occasion. As FW approaches, the dissatisfaction creeps up and suddenly what seemed delightfully basic with a subtle twist now looks downright booooringgg. FW means it’s time to unblock the dams and start radiating convictions so deep that a single outfit will shift consciousness for the entire industry. SUCH IS THE POWER OF ACCESSORIES when working on a purely visual manifesto meant to orchestrate a seasonal awakening.
